KENYA: YOU SNOOZE, YOU LOOSE !
It is interesting to note how Kenyans are Lyrical on the Opportunities presented by the newly independent Republic of South Sudan. The agricultural potential of the New Republic can feed all of Sub-Saharan states cites a report.
Our leadership is resting on the laurels of successfully negotiating the countries independence and is now sleeping on the job. It is naïve for Kenyans to assume that North Sudan will just let go the lucrative opportunities available in the South without a fight. Newly independent South Sudan is desperate for immediate solutions for its reconstruction plans. Desperate situations, call for desperate measures and I would not be surprised if South Sudan opts to use the already well established infrastructure found in the north.
A US firm Jarch Capital has already leased 400,000 hectares of “Extremely fertile frontier land” and companies from South Korea and the Middle East are scrambling for a piece of the pie. Port of Sudan, as located in the Red Sea is a faster gate way to Europe far from the pirate prone Indian Ocean. Though Museveni's Uganda has a road link with Juba, it is not economical for South Sudan to use the route to access the port of Mombasa. Kenya should be rest assured that South Sudan will not sit back and await for the Lamu port to be built, Port of Sudan in the north will serve their needs.
